Caritas Czech Republic and M.A.D.E. theatre organise theatre tour for social inclusion of Ukrainian refugees in Moldova’s communities

For almost a year, we have been providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees in Moldova. Due to the protracted war, the refugees need not only to have their basic needs met, but also to be socially integrated into local communities. In order to support their integration in Moldova and to strengthen social cohesion with local communities, Caritas Czech Republic, in cooperation with the M.A.D.E. theatre, will organise a national theatre tour in 7 cities of the country.

Theatre tour will strengthen the social cohesion

During January-February 2023, together with the local M.A.D.E. theatre, we will organize a free presentation of the performance "CEI DOI" (The Two) in 7 cities of Moldova: Chisinau, Anenii Noi, Criuleni, Balti, Straseni, Ceadir-Lunga, Stefan Voda and Calarasi.

The performance is addressed to all residents of Moldova, including Ukrainian refugees staying in the country, and aims to facilitate social cohesion between groups of different ethnicity, religion, political views, and to provide an environment for recreation and psychological well-being for locals and refugees from Ukraine.

All performances will be free of charge. Participants just need to pre-register here: https://bit.ly/3QOJuSC

"CEI DOI" - a silent story about social stigma

The performance "Cei Doi” (The Two) is based on the play "Romeo and Juliet" by W. Shakespeare and addresses the issue of social inequity.

The performance displays the story of two young people who disregard the social stigma and treats the topic of a divided society ruled by superficial principles. The play is silent and is based on movement, body expression and visual effects. Thus, both Moldovans and Ukrainians can understand the play without the need to know the local language.

The performance "Cei Doi” (The Two) is based on the play "Romeo and Juliet" by W. Shakespeare and addresses the issue of social inequity.

The theatrical production also has an educational, artistic and aesthetic character and invites the audience to ask itself some essential questions about hasty judgement, discrimination and unhappy life based on stigmatization.

Culture - an important pillar in the social integration process

Art and culture play an important role in the process of integrating refugees into local communities. Culture helps refugees to better understand their new environment, their new socio-cultural context and thus contributes to building a more united and open society.

"Art helps to avoid conflicts and even solve them. Theatre is a form of communication that overcomes language barriers and unites people. Caritas Czech Republic has chosen to carry out a national theatre tour, in partnership with the M.A.D.E. team and to facilitate the social cohesion between Ukrainians and Moldovans,” says Cristina Rogojina, project manager of the humanitarian aid project at Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova.

Culture is an important pillar in the social integration process

"Art unifies communities, erases misunderstandings and conveys messages beyond any verbal language. Through this theatre tour we aim to open people's hearts to acceptance and interconnection with our neighbors that fled the war," adds Vasile Vasiliev, country director at Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova.

The theatrical performances are realized within the project "Emergency aid to vulnerable Ukrainian refugees in Moldova", funded by European Union.
