Caritas Czech Republic helps Ukrainian refugees in Moldova cope with winter

People running from the war left almost everything at home, including winter clothes. Caritas Czech Republic supports Ukrainian refugees to survive harsh winter conditions. Around 2,000 Ukrainian refugees accommodated in Gagauzia (Moldova) will receive support to buy winter clothes. The initiative is part of Caritas Czech Republic's winter support activities for Ukrainian refugees and aims to cover the additional needs that winter usually brings for people.

Winter support enables refugees to live in dignity

Caritas Czech Republic has started the distribution of aid worth 2,400 lei (117 EUR) to refugees accommodated in Comrat, Ciadâr Lunga, Vulcanesti, Cahul and Basarabeasca in Moldova. This form of support, possible thanks to EU funding, will enable the refugees to get the winter clothes and shoes they need and at the same time will allow a decent living during the cold season.

"We intend to provide this form of aid for 2,000 refugees. This support will enable Ukrainian refugees to buy a wide range of seasonal items, starting from gloves and scarves and ending with jackets and footwear suitable for the cold season," explained Cristina Rogojina, coordinator of the humanitarian project at Caritas Czech Republic.

Vladimir Cîlcic, representative of Caritas Czech Republic office in Comrat added: "Together with our partner, NGO Vesta, we regularly bring Ukrainian refugees to shops where they can select the winter items they need. In this way, we also ensure that refugees from remote villages or those with reduced mobility have access to this form of support."

So far 1,900 refugees have already received the aid from Caritas Czech Republic and chose the clothes they need for the cold season.

"We are living through the hardest winter yet. We are far from home and scattered all over the world. It's hard for us, but this help relieves us of the worries we have. We bought all the clothes we need this winter and now we are happy that we have saved money for vegetables and dairy products,” shared a refugee couple temporarily accommodated in Comrat.

In addition to this form of support, Ukrainian refugees from Gagauzia also receive a cash allowance of 700 lei/family (34 EUR) for the cold season from November 2022 to February 2023.

The winterization activities are part of the "Emergency aid to vulnerable Ukrainian refugees in Moldova" project run by Caritas Czech Republic with the support of the European Union.
