Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova will equip placement centres for refugees from Ukraine

Up to 100,000 refugees have arrived in Moldova since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. This is an unprecedented number for our country. Caritas Czech Republic will support incoming Ukrainians with the most urgent needs and will provide medical kits at border crossings.

Providing basic needs

Representatives of Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova have recently visited the Palanca’s border crossing point between Moldova and Ukraine. The Palanca border crossing is considered to be the busiest crossing for refugees these days. Most of the refugees arriving to Moldova through this border point are mothers with very young children and elderly people.

Most of these people stay in Moldova only for a day or a night, then continue to Romania, and then go on to other European Union countries in search for a place to live and work until things calm down in their country.

While they are in Moldova, all these people need a warm meal and a temporary roof over their heads. The Moldovan authorities have opened a number of placement centres, but the huge influx of refugees into the country has put a strain on the authorities for supplying these centres with necessary resources for a decent living.

We visited 8 temporary placement centres for refugees across the country and determined the  existing urgent needs. The centres are insufficiently equipped with beds and sanitary equipment. The local authorities do not have enough funds to improve the living conditions of refugees in these centres.

Apart from being partly heated, these centres are in urgent need of cosmetic repairs and need to be equipped with beds, kitchen equipment - fridges, stoves, and sanitary equipment - such as washing machines. There is also an urgent need for blankets, pillows, towels etc.

Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova will equip 8 refugee placement centers located near the borders with Ukraine with washing machines, stoves, refrigerators, clothes dryers, heaters, beds, linen sets, duvets, pillows, towels, etc.

Medical kits for refugees at the borders

Alongside with various equipment, refugees also need basic medicines. We will provide medical kits for 3.000 refugees in 4 border points with Ukraine. People with diabetes or those suffering from non-communicable diseases will receive additional medication. Caritas Czech Republic representatives will also distribute 3,000 hygiene kits containing wet wipes, dry wipes, toilet paper, soap and antiseptic products.

Soon about 90 tons of food through Caritas Czech Republic will reach Ukrainian refugees in Moldova.

"Our entire team is involved in this global gesture of humanity and we will continue to persevere in providing support to refugees arriving in Moldova. Anyone can help and support Caritas Czech Republic's fundraising efforts. " said Vasile Vasiliev, Country Director of Czech Caritas in Moldova.

Caritas Czech Republic stands by the refugees in Ukraine and will provide them with the necessary support and shelter.
