The infrastructure for the recovery of sorted recyclable materials will be created in Criuleni

This is foreseen in the Strategy for solid household waste management in the city of Criuleni, for the period 2022 - 2026 approved by local councillors on Friday 18th February 2022.

In the city of Criuleni there are two garbage dumpsites, both unauthorized, where about 2500 tons of solid waste are deposited annually. Both dumpsites are not only an environmental hazard, but are also located close to people's homes - one is one kilometre away from the city and the other is only 200 meters away from the village of Ohrincea.

The biggest problem with these dumpsites is visible especially in summer, when they ignite spontaneously and citizens of the city and the surrounding villages have to breathe this polluted air.

Thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova, the Municipality of Criuleni will implement the Solid Household Waste Management Strategy, which includes the creation of infrastructure for sorting recyclable waste.

According to the estimates in the Strategy, the Municipal Enterprise Comunservice Criuleni is to take over the control over the collection of recyclable waste from the private operator Salubris Group SRL, once the agreement between Criuleni Administration and Salubris Group SRL expires at the end of 2021.

Thus, the municipal enterprise will ensure the collection of recyclables in transparent bags from residential areas with individual houses and the arrangement of a place for manual sorting and baling of recyclables at the premises of the municipal enterprise.

This will allow better control over the collection process of recyclables and increase the recovery of recyclable materials from municipal solid waste generated in the city of Criuleni.

The recyclable materials recovered at the sorting and baling site will be sold directly to the recycler ABS Recycling, with which the city concluded cooperation by January 2027. The proceeds will be used to support the selective collection system of municipal solid waste.

The strategy for the management of solid municipal waste in the Criuleni for the period 2022 - 2026, foresees that more than 90% of the population of Criuleni will be able to selectively collect waste and will be ensured the recovery of about 30% of recyclable materials contained in municipal solid waste. The document also calls for actions to promote the composting of organic waste, including agricultural waste in households, in order to reduce by at least 30% the amount of this mismanaged waste. At the same time, according to the document, Criuleni will ensure the safe disposal of at least 30% of bulky, construction, demolition and agricultural waste.

The Strategy for solid household waste management in the Criuleni, for the period 2022 - 2026 was developed within the project "Building a functional and sustainable waste management system in the city of Criuleni", which is implemented by Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova in cooperation with Caritas Slovakia and City hall of Criuleni. The project is financially supported by the Slovak Agency for International Development Cooperation.
