Building a functional and sustainable waste management system in Criuleni

Project duration: September 2021 - August 2022. Project partners: Caritas Slovakia, Criuleni mayoralty, Public Association "Fiecare Contribuie Pentru Schimbare".

Overall objective: To contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of Moldovan population through the development of sustainable waste management system and environmental protection approach.

Specific Objective: To strengthen the local efforts in building a waste management infrastructure and culture in Criuleni municipality.

Aim: The local waste management, infrastructure and governance will be improved and optimized, the capacities of stakeholders involved in the waste management system will be increased and the local community will be informed and involved in sustainable use of resources and environmental protection. Ultimately, thanks to the project, the quality of life and health of the population of Criuleni municipality will improve.

  • Comunservice Criuleni staff
  • General public in Criuleni, Ohrincea and Zolonceni
  • Active NGOs and volunteers
  • Youth and children from the region

Description of project: In order to improve the quality of life and health of the population, the project assists the Criuleni municipality and 2 adjacent villages (Ohrincea and Zolonceni) in developing their waste management system in line with local needs and national legal requirements. The intervention will strengthen the local efforts of relevant stakeholders in building an efficient waste management infrastructure and culture in Criuleni. Specifically, a local waste management strategy together with an action plan will be developed and its implementation facilitated. Subsequently, the capacities of local stakeholders in waste management will be strengthen and necessary infrastructure will be purchased. Emphasis will also be given to actions focusing on biodegradable waste practices – composting and other ways of reuse of organic waste will be promoted. To increase public´s participation in waste recycling activities, several public-raising activities will be conducted. Slovak expertise will be shared and be used throughout the intervention, with a special focus on environmental protection, waste recycling and biodegradable waste practices.
