roject duration: April 2011 to April 2014

Project partners: ProRuralInvest, Viorel Gherciu (project coordinator)

Project Focus: To support the sustainable use of remittances for profit-making activities in Moldova.

Aim: By the end of the project, 900 Moldovans will have been supported in their entrepreneurial activities: those who have emigrated and those who have received remittances. At the same time, remittances will have been used to establish enterprises.

Target group:
  • family members who receive remittances
  • returnees and senders of remittances to Moldova (900 people altogether)
Country / region: 32 regions of Moldova

Description of project: At first, a market analysis will be carried out, which is going to define entrepreneurial opportunities and the specific problems relating to the development of an enterprise. This will lead to the creation of a functional database for the support for sustainable use of remittances. The results of the analysis will be processed together with the information about the business opportunities available and will be disseminated through a manual that will be published. The returning migrants and the recipients of remittances will be informed about the positive effects of productive investments; returning migrants and remittance recipients will thus become aware of the advantages they gain from being able to explore existing entrepreneurial opportunities.

Caritas CR and its partners will organise 64 roundtables in all 32 regions of Moldova with the aim to inform the wider public about entrepreneurial opportunities and about the possibilities of how to join the project as a project recipient, i.e. to participate in the planned training in the area of business and management.

Furthermore, ProRuralInvest and Caritas CR will arrange training courses for at least 600 returnees and remittance recipients. The main subjects of the training courses will be business, management, setting up one’s own enterprise and the development of entrepreneurial ideas. During the training process, 150 potential businesspeople will be chosen to receive follow-up assistance and leadership when setting up their own business.

Experienced experts and trainers will provide each of the 150 selected members of the target group with help when starting up a business, particularly regarding the following:

  • Registration of the business
  • Creation of a business plan
  • Relations with financial institutions
  • Launch of the business itself
To ensure the development of the newly established business, the participants of the training courses will be able to make use of follow-up assistance. Cooperation will continue with all the 150 entrepreneurs, namely during all the development phases of their businesses, as well as during their stable operation. Thanks to this, their entrepreneurial abilities will be reinforced, especially those regarding the preparation of job contracts, internal regulations, legal aspects, preparation of economic and financial reports, development of a marketing strategy and preparation of a supply and purchase agreements.

For 50 new Moldovan entrepreneurs, Caritas CR and its partners will organise three exchange visits of 20 similar small enterprises established by Romanian migrants and remittance recipients in Romania.  The aim of the visits is the mutual exchange of experience and the creation of trading partnerships.

Another part of the project involves collecting and spreading examples of good practice among the Moldovan public. A handbook titled “Stories of business success” ,of which 3000 copies will be released, is going to sum up the ways in which entrepreneurial activities can raise the income of a household.  Stories of success like these will increase the impact of the project and will lead to increased motivation of other potential migrants and remittance recipients.
