Caritas Czech Republic supports hygiene education and sanitation improvements in Moldavian rural schools

In Moldova, outdated infrastructure and limited access to safe drinking water present a major challenge for many rural communities, especially in schools. Many educational institutions rely on wells or old plumbing systems that do not meet national safety standards, exposing children to health risks on a daily basis. To address this issue, Caritas Czech Republic, with financial support from the European Union, is conducting an initiative aimed at modernising sanitation facilities in schools and raising awareness about hygiene among students, teachers, and parents.

Hygiene education efforts for rural communities in Moldova

Over 50 parents and teaching staff from Cobusca Nouă Gymnasium in Anenii Noi district took part in an awareness-raising session organised by the mobile team from LDA Moldova – a partner of Caritas Czech Republic. The discussions focused on personal hygiene, water hygiene, hygiene at school and at home, and intimate hygiene for adolescent girls.

“It starts at home – children imitate their parents. For older children, the best approach is: no criticism, no pressure. These are our core recommendations for parents,” explained Vlad Balaban, trainer with the LDA Moldova mobile team.Cobusca Noua Moldova

The participants expressed appreciation for the practical advice and the open, honest atmosphere.

“We are thankful to the European Union, Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova, and all parents and pupils involved in this project. At the beginning of the new school year, our gymnasium will have improved sanitation facilities for both students and teachers, said school director Lucia Cotorobai.

Parents also appreciated the initiative. “I have a daughter in 6th grade and a son in 5th grade. These trainings are very useful for pupils, teachers, and parents alike. Our children deserve a clean, safe learning environment,” added Dora Cebotari, a local parent.

Better hygiene conditions and inclusion for girls

As part of this initiative, 50 girls over the age of 13 received personal hygiene kits and attended training sessions conducted by peer-to-peer trainers.

“Today’s session on intimate hygiene was very useful – I learned a lot of new things,” said Ana , a 7th-grade student.

“I really enjoyed the open discussion. The trainers treated us as equals,” added Felicia, an 8th-grade student.

Through education, infrastructure, and solidarity, Caritas Czech Republic and its local partners are paving the way for a Moldova where every child has access to safe water, proper sanitation, and the care they need to thrive.

Initiatives with sustainable impact in Moldova

Caritas Czech Republic’s commitment to improving hygiene infrastructure goes beyond the current project. An innovative rainwater harvesting, filtration, and storage system will be installed at the “Albinuța” kindergarten in Bilicenii Vechi, Sîngerei district, with the support of Czech and local experts. This eco-friendly solution provides an alternative water source for domestic use in educational institutions.

In addition, Caritas Czech Republic has made a lasting impact on Moldova’s social service system. With the support of the Czech Development Agency, two assisted living facilities were opened in Glodeni and Soroca for individuals with mental health challenges. These facilities offer not only shelter but also support for community integration, communication skills development, and employment opportunities.
