Creating safer and inclusive schools though Caritas Czech Republic´s work in Moldova

Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova, with financial support from the European Union and the Czech Development Agency, marks a significant milestone in its project aimed at improving hygiene and sanitation conditions in rural schools. The first two educational institutions located in the north of the country - Dimitrie Cantemir Gymnasium in Glodeni and the Gymnasium in Cobusca Nouă, Anenii Noi district - have completed renovation and construction works to provide modern sanitation facilities.

Significant improvement in sanitation infrastructure in Moldovan rural schools

The new sanitation facilities provide students and teaching staff with access to hygienic, modern restrooms, including spaces adapted for individuals with reduced mobility and disabilities. These improvements go beyond infrastructure investment; they directly contribute to creating a healthy, safe, and welcoming educational environment essential for children’s development and the well-being of the school community.

The upgraded restrooms ensure that all students, including those living with special needs, enjoy safe, hygienic, and dignified conditions. This advancement supports inclusion and fosters a positive school atmosphere conducive to learning and attendance.

Caritas Czech Republic's sustainable initiatives beyond sanitation

The work in Glodeni and Cobusca Nouă signals the start of a broader effort. By the end of 2026, a total of 10 schools across Moldova will benefit from the reconstruction or modernisation of sanitation facilities. The project will extend to other regions, including Lipcani, Strășeni, Hâncești, and Șoldănești by year-end. Beyond school sanitation, Caritas Czech Republic is also implementing innovative and sustainable projects such as the installation of rainwater harvesting, filtration, and storage systems in kindergartens like "Albinuța" in Bilicenii Vechi. Additionally, through support from Czech and local experts, Caritas contributes to Moldova’s social service system by opening assisted living facilities for persons living with mental health problems in Glodeni and Soroca, providing shelter, community integration, and employment assistance. These efforts underscore Caritas Czech Republic’s ongoing commitment to improving rural communities by ensuring access to better hygiene, sustainable water solutions, and improved education acces.
