Better sanitation and hygiene facilities for students in rural schools in Moldova

Project duration: January 2024 - December 2026

Main Goal: To improve the water and sanitation facilities for the students and school staff of 25 schools in Moldova as well as to increase hygiene awareness for the students, parents, school staff, local authorities and the surrounding to the selected schools population in the communities.

Main Activities:

  • Mapping and categorization of schools: The Ministry and UNICEF will collect information about schools in Moldova and will provide us with relevant data. Based on this information, vulnerability categories and school selection criteria will be established to fulfill project requirements.
  • Technical evaluation of schools’ water supply systems. After the approval of the school selection criteria and vulnerability categories, the selected schools will be visited by the expert, and collaboration agreements will be concluded with them.
  • Development of a technical project (sanitation facilities) for every school: Based on the two standard technical solutions/modalities proposed in the project and the results of the technical assessments, every school will have the possibility to choose one model of the toilets.
  • Contracting of the construction company/ies to rebuild/construct sanitation facilities in schools: a service provider will be contracted to make the necessary improvements in the sanitation infrastructure.
  • Training in appropriate technical maintenance and water management: Every school that will benefit from the project, will be trained in technical maintenance of the newly established water systems and water management.
  • Develop training and informational materials: The specified training program will be developed by the implementing partners together with contracted local and international experts. Conduct the KAP study

Direct and Indirect beneficiaries:

  • Schools in rural areas (25 schools in total)
  • Teachers and administrative staff from selected schools (75 teachers)
  • Associations of parents and teachers (maximum 25 associations, average 10 persons per association, Total: 250)
  • Students from selected schools (Goal: 2 500 students)
  • Parents of all students from the 25 selected schools (target: at least 4,000)
  • Local Public Authorities (LPAs) from the rural areas where the project is implemented (25 LPAs)
  • Communities around the selected schools (over 20,000 people)

Total budget: 1 077 252,00 EUR
