We try to offer enough time for each visit, to listen to people, says Elena Adașan, from Balti, Moldova

In Moldova, the need to develop social services for the elderly people is growing as their population steadily increases. Following the experience of the Czech Republic, Caritas Czech Republic has opened 11 health and social care centres in the country, including one in Balti, led by Elena Adașan. Although it is not an easy job, Elena finds fulfillment in helping people. The centre, together with local authorities, provides essential services for people with physical or mental health issues and those in vulnerable situations.

Moldova's health sector is plagued by an outflow of workers abroad. Young people are leaving because of the poor economic situation, leaving mainly the elderly in the country, who suffer from inadequate health and social care, as well as loneliness. Eugenia, 74, was in a similar situation. Seven years ago, a nurse Nina from a nearby home care centre started visiting her. Thanks to her regular visits, Eugenia is feeling much better.

A visit to the doctor can be an uncomfortable experience for the elderly or people with reduced mobility. Telemedicine is a promising solution as it can provide remote access to health services for people from different parts of Moldova. Ana and Radu decided to volunteer and assist people in Moldova to use the telemedicine services. They share with us how this practice enriched their own lives and brought a smile on the faces of people they got to help.

Supported housing - a space dedicated to safety, care, and inclusion. The story of Gheorghe from Moldova

Caritas Czech Republic has opened 2 supported housing centres in Moldova to provide people in vulnerable positions with the care they need. Supported housing provides a stable and structured environment where people can receive ongoing support tailored to their specific needs. The residents of these homes are people living with mental health problems, such as 32-year-old Gheorghe, who receives help to develop household, social, and communication skills so that he is prepared for independent living.
