We have put our lives on hold, say two Ukrainian sisters who have taken refuge in Moldova

Svetlana and Victoria, two sisters from Odesa, Ukraine, had a comfortable and peaceful life until the outbreak of the war. When the bombings intensified, the sisters, aged 39 and 36, along with their elderly  father and children, embarked on a search for a safe refuge, which they eventually found in the town of Comrat in Moldova.

In the refugee placement centre in Calarasi, Moldova, we met Maxim Lesciuk, an 18-year-old from Odesa. A tennis champion and sports enthusiast, Maxim was due to enroll in firefighting school from the autumn of 2022. He was eager to serve and protect people in emergency situations. Maxim’s plans, and the dreams of many others, were shattered when the war came and disrupted everything.

The war in Ukraine has turned the lives of thousands of families upside down. Thirty-year-old Valentina Vozneak was in her last trimester of pregnancy when the war broke out. After enduring days and nights of bombing, Valentina decided it was time to leave with her children and mother to find a safer place. They chose Moldova as their refuge, and Caritas Czech Republic supported them with hygiene products and food vouchers to meet their basic needs.

Telemedicine is an innovative way of using technology to provide remote health and care services to vulnerable people, such as the elderly, those with reduced mobility or those living in remote areas. Telemedicine has also become a beacon of hope for Vasile, a 74-year-old resident of the village of Cărbuna in Moldova. Remote care services provided by Caritas Czech Republic have given Vasile back hope and improved his quality of life.

I still do not know how to explain to children what war is and why it came into our lives, says Svita, a refugee from Ukraine in Moldova

The war in Ukraine has been going on for a year. A year of terror, destruction, people fleeing their homes and destinies turned upside down. Caritas Czech Republic has been supporting Ukrainian refugees in Moldova since the beginning of the conflict. Svita Andrusyk from Kirovohrad took refuge in Gagauzia, Moldova, and is grateful that thanks to our support she can provide a dignified life for her three daughters.
