20-year-old Alexandr, a future medical assistant studying at Bălți College of Medicine in Moldova, dedicates his time as a volunteer at the Rebeca home care centre in Bălți, which was opened by Caritas Czech Republic. Together with other volunteers, he helps elderly people to benefit from remote medical consultations via the telemedicine platform. He shared with us his motivation for joining the programme and how this journey has changed his personal life also.

Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. People of working age often leave abroad to seek for jobs. Social and health care services face a shortage of staff who can provide care for the elderly people and others in need, like 44-year-old Mihai. Caritas Czech Republic opened home care centres across the country to provide vulnerable people with the care they need.

Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Poverty is a significant issue for the elderly people, who are often left alone in rural areas. Young people leave Moldova to find jobs abroad and do not return home. The elderly people struggle not only with financial hardship, but also with inadequate health and social care. One of them is Maria, 74, from the village of Cigârleni. Thanks to the services of a home care centre opened by Caritas Czech Republic, she is being looked after.

Fleeing the growing conflict in Ukraine, they embarked on a challenging journey, driven by a strong desire to keep their family safe and secure. Their story reflects both resilience and the challenges of starting a new life.
