This year, International Women's Day is about investing in women. Particularly in disadvantaged regions, women need support in the beginning to take their lives into their own hands. Laurinda, Rana and Tamar managed to start their own businesses despite obstacles, prejudice and poor economic conditions. Read the inspiring stories of these women who are now standing on their own two feet and providing for their families and communities thanks to the support of Caritas Czech Republic.

In the quiet and small Moldovan village of Chirsova, Sofia Dolapci and her three children have found their new home. Sofia’s dream of having her own home and happy family life in Mikolayiv was destroyed by war. Two years later, Sofia remains hesitant to return to Ukraine, fearful of the impact on her children's well-being. She hopes that peace will prevail and her family will be able to move into their new home and rebuild their lives in Ukraine.

Moldova is among the poorest countries in Europe. Young people leave the country to seek employment abroad. Healthcare and social services face a shortage of workers to provide care for seniors and people with disabilities. Often, family members like Svetlana and Anatolli, both in their sixties, have to take care of their daughter Oksana. However, they are not alone, thanks to the services of the home care centre.

Svetlana and Victoria, two sisters from Odesa, Ukraine, had a comfortable and peaceful life until the outbreak of the war. When the bombings intensified, the sisters, aged 39 and 36, along with their elderly  father and children, embarked on a search for a safe refuge, which they eventually found in the town of Comrat in Moldova.

In the refugee placement centre in Calarasi, Moldova, we met Maxim Lesciuk, an 18-year-old from Odesa. A tennis champion and sports enthusiast, Maxim was due to enroll in firefighting school from the autumn of 2022. He was eager to serve and protect people in emergency situations. Maxim’s plans, and the dreams of many others, were shattered when the war came and disrupted everything.
