The nurse is like a daughter to me, says Maria from Moldova, who uses the services of a home care centre

Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Poverty is a significant issue for the elderly people, who are often left alone in rural areas. Young people leave Moldova to find jobs abroad and do not return home. The elderly people struggle not only with financial hardship, but also with inadequate health and social care. One of them is Maria, 74, from the village of Cigârleni. Thanks to the services of a home care centre opened by Caritas Czech Republic, she is being looked after.

From January 2024 to December 2026, the project "Better sanitation and hygiene facilities for students in rural schools in Moldova" proposes activities aimed at providing students and the communities they belong to, a healthier and safer environment.

I hope that peace will prevail and we will be able to rebuild our lives, says Sofia, a refugee from Ukraine in Moldova

In the quiet and small Moldovan village of Chirsova, Sofia Dolapci and her three children have found their new home. Sofia’s dream of having her own home and happy family life in Mikolayiv was destroyed by war. Two years later, Sofia remains hesitant to return to Ukraine, fearful of the impact on her children's well-being. She hopes that peace will prevail and her family will be able to move into their new home and rebuild their lives in Ukraine.
