Stories of refugees: The password "Newborn from Ukraine" ensured shelter for Alexandra's family

At just one months old, Alexandra's granddaughter embarked on a path of wandering and faced obstacles too harsh for a newborn. When Alexandra, her daughter and newborn granddaughter left the city of Odessa, the women did not know where they were going and what awaited them. We found Alexandra taking care of her niece at the Republican Experimental Center for Orthopedic Prosthetics and Rehabilitation in Moldova (CREPOR), which was equipped by Caritas Czech Republic. Alexandra remembers the hardships they faced until they felt safe.

”In the neighbouring house there was a family hiding in the basement. I knew there was a pregnant woman there. One day her husband went out to find some food and medicine for his wife. While looking for food, he became a target of a gunfire. The man was killed on the spot.” This is how Natalia Starostenco from Kherson, Ukraine, remembers the day she ran away with her family from the explosions and bombings happening in Ukraine. Today, Natalia is staying in Moldova, where she received help from Caritas Czech Republic.

The use of telemedicine in health and social care: myths, benefits, barriers

Moldova is facing a rapidly ageing population. In 2020, the number of people over 60 years represented 21.8% of the country's total population, and the share of this age group is constantly increasing.  In response to this phenomenon, the public authorities and NGOs have developed several health and social care services to ensure that older people can live decently and independently in their own homes. But progress in these efforts has been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected the effective and continuous provision of these services.
