In Moldova, we focus on the development of health care, social protection, social inclusion, rural development and environmental protection, as well as humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine.

Ukrainian refugees sheltered in Moldova start enjoying life again

At the summer camp of Cosnita village in Dubasari district, 130 refugees from Ukraine are currently accommodated. For them, life is divided in two parts -  until February 24, 2022 and after this awful day when Ukraine was attacked by Russia. Caritas Czech Republic in Moldova provided the summer camp with necessary equipment, such as washing machines, refrigerators, but also blankets and pillows, to ensure that the refugees have a comfortable place to stay in a new country.

Starting with February 24, 2022, Ukraine's civilian population has been forced to flee their country. Since then, millions of people have been displaced within Ukraine or in neighbouring countries. Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and the Republic of Moldova have become the main host countries for the Ukrainian people. Although Moldova is Ukraine's smallest neighbour and has the fewest economic resources, it has received the most refugees per capita so far. How is the country coping with the current situation and how is Caritas Czech Republic helping refugees in Moldova?

Caritas Czech Republic promotes waste sorting in Moldova

In Moldova, improper waste management causes about 10.7% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, compared to the global average of about 3%. The amount of solid household waste is constantly increasing because the rate of sorting, recycling and recovery of waste is very low in the country. Caritas Czech Republic  develops a functional and sustainable waste management system in the city of Criuleni to not only fight against environmental problems, but also to improve the health and quality of life of local citizens.

Stories of refugees: The password "Newborn from Ukraine" ensured shelter for Alexandra's family

At just one months old, Alexandra's granddaughter embarked on a path of wandering and faced obstacles too harsh for a newborn. When Alexandra, her daughter and newborn granddaughter left the city of Odessa, the women did not know where they were going and what awaited them. We found Alexandra taking care of her niece at the Republican Experimental Center for Orthopedic Prosthetics and Rehabilitation in Moldova (CREPOR), which was equipped by Caritas Czech Republic. Alexandra remembers the hardships they faced until they felt safe.
